Cherokee Environmental Sustainability Initiative (CESI)
CESI Update - November 1, 2008
On Saturday November 1, 2008, approximately 15 volunteers planted 11 trees at Dwight Terry Park at Pine Bluff. The tree planting was a joint effort sponsored by Waste Management and Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency (CRPA) in conjunction with The Cherokee Environmental Sustainability Initiative (C.E.S.I). The initiative was started this past summer by CRPA and its mission is to re-grow the plants and trees that have been lost as a result of the area's considerable growth over the last two decades, including the impact caused by park development.
After completing the parking lot expansion at Dwight Terry, Waste Management offered to purchase trees to plant in order to provide screening and shading at the new parking lot. Seven volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 4056 attended the tree planting as well as four Waste Management employees, three CRPA employees and one community service worker.
What is CESI?
In an effort to facilitate long term environmental sustainability at the local level, Cherokee Recreation & Parks Agency (CRPA) is presently implementing a new program, with community involvement as one of its primary goals.
The Cherokee Environmental Sustainability Initiative (CESI) aspires to educate and inspire the constituency of Cherokee County to participate and learn more about sustaining our local environment for our present needs, while simultaneously honoring the needs of future generations.
Though this alludes to great acts of grandeur, it is driven more by the idea that small acts by individuals can cumulatively benefit the communities within which we live.
As the population of our county continues to increase, one area of concern is the continued loss of tree cover. With benefits such as cleaner air and temperature modulation, tree cover plays a vital role in the long term goal of environmental sustainability.
Our first participant in this program was the Mom's Club of Woodstock South. On May 5th at The Valley playground in J.J. Biello Park, a Black Gum Tree (Nyssa sylvatica) donated by Autumn Hill Nursery was planted by a group of adults and children from this organization. A spokesperson for the group stated, "Life gives us back what we put into it. Let this tree be something for them [the children] to enjoy in those years." A plaque recognizing the donors will be displayed at the site of the tree.
